Stuart, Florida was formed back in 1895. It was a small village recognized to have honest and hardworking residents. These ideals gave no reason for the town to have a jail. Mostly, offenders with serious crimes were transferred to other jails like Fort Pierce that is located in West Palm Beach. Martin County jail was founded back in the 1900s where administrative officials saw the need to have a structure that houses offenders. However, back then, the structure was not named Martin County jail.
The facility was made of mortar and bricks. It was a small housing that never had many cells and was barred by windows on each cell, an iron door and a metal bunk. However, as years passed, there was a need to have a two or more story structure. The facility was to have a tax office, jail and also the Sheriff’s department.
Once Martin County was founded back in 1925, there was a necessity to have such a sophisticated facility. In 1926 Florida started announced that it will provide funds that would have the structure built. However, there was a scarcity of funds that made officials come up with another option. They converted Stuart high school to be the courthouse. A wooden structure was built next to the courthouse to serve as a jail. The structure was essential at the moment.
The jail was surrounded by high walls that were installed with barbed wire. This made the structure a less attractive place to stay in. The last criminal that served in the old jail was a male prisoner that escaped in 1926 and was never recaptured. He only used a spoon to free himself. As years passed, the jail has transformed.
Presently, the facility that is under the jurisdiction of Martin County, Florida. It’s entirely operated and maintained by the Martin County Sherriff. The facility houses all offenders that have been found indulging in criminal activities. Wrongdoers from other city jails are transferred to the facility once their paperwork has been completed. Criminals remain in the jail until they are acquitted, sentenced, or they are released on bail. The facility houses inmates that are serving jail terms of less than a year. The facility is comprised of reliable and adequate amenities like bathrooms, three meals a day, a television and an education program.
Visitation rules at Martin County jail are very open but at the same time very strict. All individuals that possess a valid government ID are the only ones allowed to visit inmates. Additionally, an individual should not have been involved in any felony in the past. All children below the age of 18 years should be in custody of a guardian or parent. Friends and family can visit inmates from Monday to Sunday. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday inmates can be visited as from 7:30 Am to 11:00 AM, from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM and from 5:30 to 9:00 PM.
