More Information
The first jail in Hamilton County in Florida was built in 1846, twenty years after the county was founded. It was two stories, with a jail on the first floor and living quarters for the jailer on the second. About ten years later, that building burned and a similar structure was built to replace it in 1859. Not a lot is known about the prisoners or jailers of this time.
In 1893, the county started the building that would become the longest serving jail in Florida. The builders were P.J. Pauly and Brother Jail Company. Their bid had been a few hundred dollars more and they were not southern, but their reputation for quality is what carried the day. The jail would last ninety years. The St. Louis based company had built jails all over the United States and Canada. They were able to bring the latest innovations to the county jail.
The two story brick and concrete structure still had living quarters, but they were now for the sheriff. Sheriff Eddie McGhin was known for dining with prominent judge Hal Adams at the jail. Adams was a prominent politician and had presided over the Ruby McCollum murder trial that garnered international fame. Deputy Sheriff Ches Living was residing at the jail when both of his sons were born.
The jail had two hangings that can be researched and another possible one. The news articles state that when the hangings occurred, they had to build gallows. One hanging was the 1916 hanging of Walter Durham. Durham was convicted of the killing of the popular Deputy Sheriff Raiford Royals outside of a colored rooming house. Durham talked with the deputies on the way to the gallows, got someone to write a letter to his family in Hahira, Ga, and was about to have a prayer with a minister when the deputy pulled the lever.
Through the early years, the jail was also important to other counties. They would send prisoners to Hamilton County when they needed to hold them for an extended time. The building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The current jail was built in the 1980s.
