More Information
Lafayette County Jail is a medium security county jail located in Lewisville, in the southwest region of the state of Arkansas. Lewisville is the county seat of Lafayette County. It was founded in 1827. Lafayette County, also created that year, was named for Marquis de Lafayette for his service to the colonies in the Revolutionary War. Always an important part of the history of Arkansas, Lafayette County was particularly important due to its first four decades as a territory through the Civil War. The first Lafayette County courthouse was built in 1828. The county’s second courthouse was built in Lewisville in 1841, and "new " courthouse was then completed in 1940.
The jail serves Lafayette County and the surrounding areas. It holds inmates from Lafayette County and nearby municipalities, who are awaiting trial, sentencing, or both. This county jail is operated locally by the Lafayette County Sheriff's offices. The Lafayette County AR jail takes in new arrests and detainees daily, from Lafayette County and nearby towns. After sentencing, inmates may be transferred to the Arkansas State Prison system or the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Illegal immigrants may be transferred to ICE custody for deportation.
The jail houses adult male inmates, aged eighteen years and older, who have been convicted of crimes which come under Arkansas state law. The jail is divided into pods. Each pod contains cells, common areas and an outside recreation court. Cells are generally occupied by two to three inmates. Commissary (the store within the jail) is usually held once a week and can be used by inmates to buy items if they have funds in their commissary account.
Visitation at the jail is subject to rules and schedule, both of which can change, so please check with the jail before planning a visit. All visits are conducted through a glass partition. Inmates are allowed two visitors per day. Inmates can receive money if sent according to state guidelines. Inmates can also receive mail. Incoming and outgoing mail are subject to inspection. Some acceptable items to mail include cards, letters and photos. As far as sending packages, they are subject to the prison administration.
