More Information
This is a prison that houses adult inmates. The jail’s operations are overseen by the Sheriff’s department. The overall operations at the jail are under the rule of the state department of corrections. The jail accommodates individuals that are awaiting their sentence or those that have already been sentenced for less than a year. The facility also houses all inmates that have been sentenced to serve for more than a year. Jail or prison is not a nice place to be. However, the programs and level of security at the facility are strict.
Once an inmate has been transferred to the facility, they cannot be able to ask for a motion to consider their custody. The department of correction doesn’t condone this. The sheriff’s department is responsible for counting in percentage the average time that an individual will serve in the facility. According to law, the sheriff’s department is given the power to make inmates serve at least a minimum of 50% of the inmate's sentence if at all the individual has been convicted for a misdemeanour.
The jail accepts inmates from the ICE or US Marshall if by any luck there is a space. In state prisons, all the inmates are sentenced to serve lengthier sentences on wrongdoings that are severe. Marion County jail manages and offers alternatives like house arrest, release programs, work furlough, and also private county jails when an individual is convicted for a sentence which can be served on the weekends. Overcrowding is a menace both in state and county jails. However, both systems are attempting to operate a significant behaviour program. All inmates that display remarkable behaviours may see their sentences reduced.
The Marion County jail books offenders from nearby towns and cities. Some of the offenders may spend a few days while others spend only a day before they are released by a court proceeding. The jail is divided into what is referred to as pods. Each pod consists of two individual cells, an outside recreation court and a common area where all inmates converge. The entire jail is surrounded by tall concrete walls. All the meals that are served at the facility are approved by a dietitian. Some common tables and chairs are made of steel and then engineered together. Inmates are allowed to crowd around the tables where they can play board games like chess, checkers and cards.
In the cells, there is a silver window that allows inmates to peep out and have a glance of the outside life. Each cell contains two to three inmates. The jail is said to be crowded with a 90% capacity. The population varies on day to day basis. Sometimes the jail is filled. Some inmates that arrive at the jail are partially drunk or high. Others have injuries and bruises from night fights.
