The current Clay County Jail building was once home of a Russell Mills sewing plant built in 1930. The detention center was built in 1985 and is a medium custody adult facility that generally houses both male and female inmates that are usually serving less than 1 year or awaiting trial and/or sentencing.
The Clay County Jail holds inmates, arrestees and detainees that have been alleged of various crimes or violations committed in Clay county and surrounding cities. The jail is operated under the control of The Clay County Sheriff's Office and according to sheriff reports, staffs approximately 30 correctional workers and deputies.
Should you or a loved one find yourself a temporary resident of the Clay County Jail there are some services and privileges that are available such as inmate work release programs, commissary, collect and prepaid phone call options, visitation and bail bond services that will hopefully provide some ease or a measure of comfort to a difficult situation.
Upon intake at Clay County Jail which can be a process that takes up to several hours, inmates will be placed in a holding cell, they will be fingerprinted, have there mugshot taken and be interviewed as to their true identity (full legal name, date of birth, address),as well as psychological and medical history.
