More Information
The Office of Sheriff of Franklin County has been in existence since February 4, 1818. The Sheriff's office maintains the jail facility, “Franklin County Detention Center”, for Franklin County.
The old Franklin County Jail was built in 1930 and the renovated detention center was opened in March 2008. This facility is a “medium to maximum security facility.” The jail is considered a temporary holding station for inmates. Inmates who are awaiting trial or have been sentenced to less than 1 year of incarceration, can remain at the detention center. Inmates, who have been sentenced to 1 year or more in jail, are transported to the Alabama State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons to serve their sentences.
Franklin County Jail provides for the incarceration of inmates, who are arrested by Franklin County’s Police Department and “the surrounding towns or municipalities.” Visitors for the inmates will enter at the “Mike Green Center”, for visitation as well providing funds to the inmate's use of the commissary or phone access. Inmates may have access to the commissary and phone kiosks at this center.
In addition to the housing of inmates, the facility conducts programs called the “Work Release Program, Work Furlough and the House Arrest Program.” Inmates who participate in the Work Release Program, are allowed to work for various social organizations and receive credit for their efforts. The Work Furlough Program allows inmates to attend their regular jobs and return to custody at the end of the workday. The House Arrest Program allows inmates to be in a home detention program, in which the inmate can stay in their home, but monitored through the electronic monitoring device.
This facility has the capacity to hold numerous inmates along with correctional officers and offer many educational programs to inmates to rehabilitate while serving their sentences. Franklin County Jail, through this Sheriff’s agency, works to provide the “highest quality service”, to the public. This facility provides a variety of ways to help the inmates in their custody and still provide a high level of protection to the public.
