More Information
The city of Anahuac was named after an Aztec word meaning “capital.” This is fitting since Anahuac is the seat of Chambers County, Texas. It is well-known for its annual alligator festival, called “Gatorfest.” The 2.1 square mile (5.5 square kilometre) town is located in the northeast corner of the Gulf of Mexico’s Trinity Bay on Lake Anahuac.
The Chambers County Jail is named after General Thomas Jefferson Chambers (born in April 13, 1802 and died in March 15th, 1865). Originally from Virginia, General Chambers was a lawyer by trade and fluent in Spanish. General Chambers organized 1,915 volunteers for the Texas Revolution. He was rewarded with Bounty Certificate #41 for 1,280 acres as payment for his service.
Eventually, General Chambers settled in Anahuac, Texas. In 1943, his house was purchased by Chambers County to add to the National Register as a Texas Historic Landmark. In 1858, Chambers County was created from the previous Liberty and Jefferson counties.
The Chambers County Jail was built in 1983 and has a capacity of 148 inmates. This is an adult jail operated by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office. It receives inmates from local towns and the Anahuac Police Department. If there is available space, then the Chambers County Jail will accept inmates from the US Marshal or ICE.
The vast majority of sentenced inmates have received terms of less than 2 years. On average, county jail inmates in the State of Texas have their sentences reduced by 30% to 90% if they demonstrate good behavior.
