The Pittsburg County jail in McAlester Okla is a medium security jail that houses on average 70 plus inmates. Since the original construction in 1975, the facility has been renovated since that time to offer more modern accommodations. Inmates are housed in separate areas depending on the level of crime and risk assessment and behavior. This is an adult facility and for this reason, juvenile inmates are not house at this facility.

The jail is managed by the county sheriff’s department and the prison by the state department of corrections. Differing in location and level of security, the prison facility is for those convicted of crimes with more than a year of sentencing and jail would be for those with a minimal sentence of less than a year to serve.

Due to overcrowding in the penal system, Pittsburg County, OK jail offers alternatives to the jail and prison system, such as a work release program that allows inmates who have minimal time on their sentence to work outside the facility. Along with this work furlough provision and house arrest which are offered on a good behavior program for those that have had their sentences reduced.

The facility is divided into pods, with individual cells as well as common and recreation areas, which are surrounded by walls. Daily meals are provided by a state approved dietitian. Inmates are allowed daily recreation time which playing cards and board games are provided. Two or three inmates are housed in each cell depending on the population at the time.
