Darius Randall Robinson 41, an inmate died in the Caddo County jail on April 4, 2016. Robinson was strangled after being put in a chokehold by jailers trying to subdue the inmate after he tried to escape out of his cell. The Detention Center is located in the town of Anadarko, about an hour away from Oklahoma City. Originally, prison guards told News9 that Robinson tried to escape out of his cell while they were clearing items he had damaged and destroyed. Prison guards state that Robinson reportedly began “destroying his cell and acting out in a violent way”.
Officials say, “when the prison guards opened Robinson’s cell door to check on him, the detainee reportedly charged towards them”. He was subdued, and pepper sprayed. It’s also reported that a neck hold was also used to restrain the prisoner. "While lying handcuffed on the floor, and foaming from the mouth, Robinson became unresponsive". Autopsy reports from the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's office state, "Robinson had a broken neck, abrasions from his handcuffs, and hemorrhages". The probable cause of death was by asphyxiation due to "manual compression of neck".
In a statement, the attorneys for Robinson’s family states: "The autopsy confirms the family's worst fears; Robinson's death was the result of excessive force. The medical examiner's ruled that the deceased injuries were consistent with manual strangulation. Apparently, Robinson’s injuries were caused by the jailers.
