The Burleigh-Morton County Detention Center is located in Bismarck, ND which is in Burleigh County, ND. This county jail is capable of housing inmates in dormitory type rooms to maximum security cells. The jail is under the jurisdiction of Burleigh Country, ND. Burleigh County Sheriffs maintain and operate this facility. It houses inmates that are serving a short jail sentence of less than one year. The inmates stay at this jail until they have been sentenced, acquitted, or are released on bail. These inmates have been arrested and then jailed for a variety of offenses. This facility is the largest Class 1 facility in the state of North Dakota. Offenders from the local police and city jails are transferred to this facility after paperwork has been completed.

In 1875 the original jail and courthouse were built for $20,000. This original jail was constructed from logs. Then, in 1931 a new jail, Sheriffs office, and courthouse was built to replace the structures built in 1875. This was built at a cost of $300, 000. A new detention facility was then built in 1992 for approx 4 million dollars. Due to community growth over the years, a need for a larger jail was determined. The most recent jail is now a 40, 000 square foot facility, construction began in 2015 and completed in 2017. The cost was approx 80 million dollars to built.

The new jail facility has office and support space for the Sheriff's department staff, a visitor's area, booking and holding area, as well as an outdoor recreation area for the inmates, and a vehicle sallyport. Other support spaces include a full laundry area, a full kitchen and administrative offices.

This county jail provides basic amenities for the inmates such as bathroom facilities, three meals a day, educational programs, and TV facilities. Inmates have access to the commissary to purchase personal hygiene products, snacks and stationary if they have funds in their accounts. The jail also provides program rooms for GED training, AA and NA meetings. There is also a work release program available for those that qualify, as well as other specialized programs for the inmates.
