The main jail in Eddy County New Mexico is the Eddy County Detention Center and it is a medium security facility. The facility is operated by the local sheriff department and the prison houses inmates until they are sentenced, acquitted, or released on bail. The facility can house inmates up to 1 year so most of the inmates that are sentenced to do time at this facility have usually been sentence for misdemeanor offenses. The facility provides the inmates with their basic necessities and with programs such as work release. Â Eddy County Detention Center is privately owned and the facility employs from 50 to 99 individuals.
The facility offers multiple different ways for inmates to receive visitations. The attorney visits have specified times or upon request in certain situations. The facility also offers family and friends the opportunity to visit as well. They can visit with family and friends via smart phone or in person down at the jail. There are rules and regulations that visitors must follow and all visitors have to be cleared by the Chief of Security. Last but not least there's a dress code that visitors must follow and it will be strictly enforced.
The Eddy County Jail was built in February 1891 with a budget of 30,000 dollars. The building was built by the Witt Brothers and it was completed in June 1892. In August 1913 the government agreed to expand the jail by adding a new east wing section and this new east wing section was completed August 1914. A company by the name of Paul Bates construction was commissioned to build a new juvenile wing of the jail and to add an elevator in May 1960. There have being multiple remodeling projects done to the jail throughout the years starting in 1965.
