The Valencia County Detention Center Facility was opened in 1980 as a state-operation adult prison and located in New Mexico state, Valencia County and city of Los Lunas. Valencia prison is a medium security jail with a complex of level 1, level 2, and level 3 facilities but also have features for both maximum and minimum security unit. The New Mexico correctional department under sheriffs operates and manages the facility while the state police also provide help in serving the prison.
The prison houses inmates who are serving less than a year, waiting for their sentences or unable to pay the bail. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US marshal inmates also detained in the facility. The facility even manages and offers an alternative to jail like house arrest, work release program and private county jail (is where a person convicted can serve their sentence on the weekend). The staffs are allowed to give specific information about the detainees to the family, friends or general public like mental health, the bond amount required, criminal charges.
The facility divided into pods which further subdivided into an individual cell. Window inside of a cell is silver made and only allow inmates to peer out — the cell house two to three individual. The common area outside area is space bound by a concrete wall and tables made of solid steel with four chairs attached. At the table, the inmates play cards and board game like chess. Prisoners are offered three meals per day, but it must be approved by a dietitian and one hour of recreation.
Visiting days are from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. A visitor should have a valid national ID and those below 18 years should be accompanied by their guarding. All visiting are non-contact and conducted through a glass partition; inmates can only have two visitors per day. The prisoner can receive money for their commissary account, letters with photos and magazines from their relatives. Money send to prisoner should have the following key requirement inmate's full name and inmate ID number
