More Information
This jail serves the county and the smaller towns surrounding it. It was built in 1860. During the civil war the building was used for military and civilian prisoners. The lower lever has no windows and was used for solitary confinement. The upper level has the cells which were made with iron bars. In 1990 this building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Upon arrest inmates are classified into one of three groups, minimum, medium or maximum. This is done for housing purposes. During the classification process, past and present arrest activities are reviewed.
Once arrested, an inmate has a certain amount of hours to receive white socks, underwear and tee shirts. White bras are added to the list for female inmates. All items must be new and in its original sealed packaging. Visitation can occur if your name is on the inmates approved visitation list. Minors are allowed if accompanied by a legal guardian.
Personal items can be released early to a family member or a person can be assigned to pick these item up. Once the inmate is released, they have seven days to pick up any personal property that they left behind. If not pickup up within that period, the property will be donated to charity.
There is a commissary on the premises. Another name used for this store is inmate canteen. Inmates can purchase items which have been approved by the correctional department. These items include food, snacks, books, writing utensils and other items that they may want.
The jail offers support to the inmates in the form of support groups. A center for Woman in Transition, Jailhouse Rock Ministries, Inc. and recovery Prison Ministries are a few of the groups included in the jail’s support system. Just like inmates need support, family and friends do also. Family and friends have the opportunity to join prison community groups. It gives them the time to talk to others who are going through the same thing. There is a Facebook group and a prison wife support group also available.
