More Information

Wabash County was formed in 1824 by a man named Thomas Spottswood Hinde. Thomas Hinde was born April 19th 1785. He was enlisted in the United States Army from the years 1812 through 1814. Other than being a serviceman in the United States Army he also pursued many other opportunities such as real estate, entrepreneurship, a Methodist minister and also an author.

The current Wabash County Jail which resides in the same building as the Wabash County Courthouse has gone through many renovations throughout its years originating from the year 1881 when it was built. The first Courthouse was actually owned by Gervase Hazleton who rented out his home for a mere $8 a year. The second Courthouse was actually the first one built for the sole reason to be a courthouse. The dimensions of this building as it measured 26 by 36 ft. and was two stories high.

The third Courthouse was actually constructed in 1831 as Scoby Stewart offered a $4000 donation for building supplies. Although this courthouse only lasted until 1857 when the building was destroyed by a massive fire along with the counties many official documents and legal papers. Although from many personal records some of the documents have been recreated.

As a result of the fire in 1857 the Courthouse was demolished and on site of the previous building the fourth Courthouse was built. This building lasted until 1877 when in June a tornado destroyed most of the business district in Mount Carmel, Illinois. This including the fourth Courthouse which leads us to the fifth and current Courthouse remaining today.

Some of the most recent remodeling has been done in the year 1959 and the year 1963. Being the majority of the building on the outside as brick has since remained the same over the years, but there has been extensive remodeling inside the courthouse including a main entrance way. Also constructed were two towers which were topped with an iron fence and also trap doors from within the building.

Today as far as the original building nothing inside remains the same as it was in 1881. It was originally built from brick and stone. The outside of the building remains pretty much the same as only the interior of the building has been remodeled several times throughout the years. On the Courthouse property located on the southern side of the courthouse there's a statue of a soldier as he stands a top of a pedestal. It was placed there during the second part of the 19th century, although it was removed in 2007 for cleaning it was returned to its original spot on the southside of the courthouse a new clean war memorial stands.
