More Information
The correctional facility was opened in 1981. It was later upgraded in 1991 as in the beginning it was just an impermanent facility with only three dormitories. The Alabama Department of correctional services manages it. The county jail is just a middle holding facility housing prisoners with minimal correctional issues. The facility used to be known as station Annex which used to house aged and infirmed inmates before being renamed to Elmore county jail.
The Elmore County facility is on an arid, flat plot of property which seems to be on an abandoned area. The buildings in Elmore facility is equivalent to a miniature high school work out that is it includes two storied metal buildings. The buildings are planned for solo beds but they have now been replaced by bunk beds. They are six showers and eight toilets in the building. The dining room of the facility is not big as it can only house about 144 people so meals are taken in shifts.
The county jail facility offers to counsel; drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs and the learned inmates at times attend lectures at a nearby community college. It's composed mostly by inmates from Elmore County. It also offers horticultural programs to the inmates. The jail also serves as a laundry facility for the area. The work of the inmates is to stay out of trouble, clean the facility, eat and sleep.
The facility also offers urgent medical treatment for the nearby surrounding facilities. However, the prison is overcrowded with inmates as it was designed to hold only 600 inmates. The numbers are now at 200 percent more. Elmore County jail houses all races including blacks, whites and other racial communities. Some are they for life imprisonment. The inmates have been jailed for committing crimes in sexual offenses, murder, drug trafficking, robbery, and assault as well as burglary and theft.
The department of corrections facility should intervene to employ more staff at the jail as it is understaffed. The officers are overwhelmed by the numbers of the inmates who are at times very impulsive. The warden however, has managed to control the facility despite the numerous challenges using professionalism.
