More Information

The Payette County Detention facility in Idaho was originally built in 1972 with the capacity for fewer than 30 inmates. An expansion and renovation of the facility was approved in February of 1999 at $1.95 million dollars which allowed to county to add additional beds, a kitchen facility, laundry, a cafeteria, medical resource, expanded visitation rooms, and a private attorney/client visiting room to guarantee privacy.

The mission of the Payette County Detention facility states that the entity is committed to public safety by ensuring the secure detention of individuals committed to their custody while providing those detained individuals with a safe and humane environment in which to fulfill their obligations. The Payette County Detention facility handles the detention of individuals needed to ensure their attendance on the witness stand, those charged with a crime who are awaiting trial, individuals who have been committed after being found in contempt of court, or individuals who have been sentences and who are serving their imprisonment term.

The Payette County Detention Center provides those in its custody with access to a variety of services including visitation rights and access to the commissary where inmates can purchase food and hygiene items, clothing, and even exercise equipment. Eligible inmates are able to take part in the work release program and the majority of those in detention have access to spiritual wellness programs, continuing education, and substance abuse classes. The detention facility is operated by the Payette County Sheriff’s Office who employ detention and correctional officers to book, process, and transport those incarcerated in the facility. Detention and correctional officers are responsible for the safety and welfare of those individuals serving out their imprisonment and do their best to screen incoming individuals for mental illness, violent escalations, and gang affiliations before placing them in their living pods; inmates with screened issues are kept away from individuals who may trigger physical violence or other dangerous escalations. Each of the four inmate pods are set up with steel tables with attached chairs where inmates are able to play cards, chess, and checkers as well as engage in conversation with one another as they serve their time.
