More Information
The Bannock County Detention Center was established in 1955. It was originally designed to house about 72 inmates. It did so for about 40 years before the increasing prison population demanded an expansion on it. The modern-day facility was constructed in the mid-1990’s and now houses over 200 inmates with 56 deputies in the division.
The modern-day facility has many perks that it didn’t in the past. For example, they now have their own medical infirmary, which includes dental services. Also, not all of the inmates are considered to be high risk anymore. There is now a specialized unit called the Sheriff/Commissioners Inmate Labor Detail. Those inmates spend some of their time doing community service work as opposed to being in their cells 24/7. It is currently manned by about three deputies. They did not have this kind of division in the past with their original 72 inmates.
The Bannock County Detention Center does provide more rooms for those who have committed moderate to severe crimes. Due to their violent nature, they often need to be confined as a result. They are kept in their own separate units as well.
More recently, the Bannock County Detention Center has been the first to develop its own Detention Automatic Response Team. This consists of highly trained officers who search and confiscate weapons and other contraband as necessary. They also perform cell extractions. An extraction is when an inmate has to be forcibly removed from his or her cell for one reason or another.
