The Newton County Jail is considered to be an essential institution for the maintenance of order and justice within the system. The jail is located in Jasper, Arkansas and stands as one of the more important components of the judicial system in the area. The Newton County Jail was first opened in 1902 and since then has gone through a series of renovations and improvements. When the jail was first built, it was a small institution that consisted of two floors. While the prison stretched out over a large area, it wasn’t as big as what it stands as today. While the outer look of the prison may have changed, the values that they stand for remain the same.
The architecture used at the time was considered unique as compared to other buildings in the area and is reminiscent of 1900s western architecture. The stone walls and barred fences gave this jail and iconic look, which is why it was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This accreditation was given to the Newton County Jail in 1994. The building was constructed by Heilman Construction Co, who later went on to build many more iconic structures within the state of Arkansas.
