More Information
McGehee Jail is home to hundreds of detainees serving different jail terms. The detainee must be of 18years and above. They must also have committed crimes protected by the Arkansas state law. The facility, which is located at 2512 Hwy 65 North in McGehee serves multiple cities in the Desha County area. The Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) is responsible for the maintenance and the daily operations of the prison.
Initially, the low-security city jail was a small single-story brick building built in 1908. It continued to serve as a jail until 1935 when it fell vacant. However, despite being vacant for what seems like decades, it has survived a replacement. The jail showcases a historical architectural look. As it is with many other prisons, the openings of McGehee Jail are made of heavy metal bars. This is in addition to concrete roofing and three cells.
Each of the three cells has a separate door to the outside. The jailās pod design accommodates a common area, which has tables pinned to the floor and seats attached to them. More often than not, the three cells host the detainees awaiting trial, sentence or pending plea. They also house intimates sentenced for less than a year. This means it is a jail for less serious crimes or repeat nuisance criminals.
However, there are those inmates lucky enough to qualify for bail especially if they are not condemned to any punishment. Some of those who get instant bails include the drunkards or those arrested for small fights. Nonetheless, they may stay in jail for a day or two as they await their release after a judgment from a court proceeding.
Even though McGehee has a prescribed a schedule of visiting hours, security remains tight, and the inmates must stay in the cells more often. Nevertheless, once in a while, they are allowed into the āpodsā from where they can play games, watch television or eat. However, there is tight supervision carried out by the guards in case any of them needs to leave the pod for whatever destination; say the library or the commissary.
