The Madison Sheriff’s jail is termed as a historic home that has been housing prisoners. The jail was established back in 1869 and was officially opened in 1871. Madison County sheriff jail is located in Edwardsville, Illinois. The building where the jail is based is considered the oldest. This makes the jail the oldest in Madison’s county government.

The jail has served thousands of inmates and still continues to do so. The building housing the jail is a three-story sheriff structure that has a nearby cell block. Back in 1904, the authorities found it reasonable to expand the cell block. The reason that pushed for this idea was so that female inmates could be accommodated.

The sheriff’s house design is unique. It crafted in a style that resembles the second empire. The sheriff’s house is among the two existing examples that are located in Edwardsville and also the only structure that has consistently withheld its historical look.

The house entails outstanding details like the mansard roof. Additionally, there are two dormers situated on both fronts and also on the rear sides. There is also a bracketed wooden made cornice. Back in 1980, the structure was added to the national register body that records historic places.
