More Information
In Morrilton, AR, the Conway County Detention Center is operated by the Conway County Sheriff’s Department. A medium-security facility, this jail was initially built-in 1829. Day-to-day operations are managed by a jail administrator, though the county sheriff has authority over how the prison is run. Both male and female adults are housed here, but juveniles are housed elsewhere.
The detention center houses inmates from Conway County, Arkansas, and several surrounding areas and other agencies like the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Morrilton Police Department. Those housed here are usually waiting for trial or sentencing. Other agencies may use it as long term lock up.
Most inmates stay in the detention center for short periods, usually one to two years. They are released when they make bail, are sentenced, or are acquitted. The majority are facing misdemeanor offenses. While living here, inmates have a bed, three meals a day, and basic amenities.
Inmates in Conway County have access to educational programs, a TV facility, work release programs, and other special services. Work release is where people are released from jail to work during the day and return at night. There are several requirements for a person to be allowed into the work release program. Another inmate designation is a trustee. Here inmates work within Conway County Detention Center as orderlies, cooks, and janitors. Some trustees are paid a small amount for their work.
The jail also operates alternatives to traditional jail time like house arrest, work furlough, and programs where people serve their sentences on weekends. There is also a good behavior program, where an inmate’s behavior can earn them early release.
Family and friends of inmates can send mail, provide commissary money, and schedule a time to visit. Commissary money lets inmates buy books, feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes, blankets, extra food, and other comfort items. Families send money to an account for their loved one, which usually includes a fee for the service.
Inmates can also call their relatives, though sometimes there is a charge for this service. Families have different options for getting these calls, from using an outside service to providing prepaid phone cards. The jail administration sets up visitation rules. Additionally, family and friends sending care packages, mail, or photographs should review the rules before sending the items so their loved ones can receive what they send.
