More Information
This is a medium detention facility that is located in the state of Alabama. All the jails operations are overseen by the office of the Covington Sherriff. The detention center houses all inmates that are awaiting sentencing or trail. It can also host an inmate awaiting both. Most detainees that are housed at Covington facility are those that are serving a sentence fewer than two years. The facility absorbs inmates from around the municipalities, surrounding towns, and the department of Andalusia police. The Andalusia police don’t have their lock, so they have to transfer lawbreakers to the facility.
New detainees are delivered at Covington every day. Some of these convicts are released after being placed on bails while others are released on pretrial services caseloads. The inmates are placed under the supervision of a court of law for a specified period. Once an inmate is placed under probation, they have to conduct themselves appropriately, or else they risk being jailed. Other inmates are released by the court when they make it clear to the court that they will appear before the jury after a while.
All inmates that are not released have to wait for their court appearance. Once they are sentenced, they get a bed and blanket at Covington jail together with a three square meal. The facility has trustees. These are the cooks and facility cleaners, I.e., those that work at the facility’s commissary. Covington’s trustees are paid a token for the job and time they dedicate to serve the facility. The jail also hands trustees a few days off their sentence which serves as an exchange for their hard work.
All new inmates are collectively placed in one holding hall with the rest of the new intakes. While they are placed at the holding cell, they are strictly observed. Their behavior matters in the facility. All out of control and violent inmates are segregated. Violent inmates are placed in a classified block where they are observed with time. Covington segregation period entails sorting out those inmates that are mentally ill, troublemakers, gang members and those that are sober. Days after, all the inmates are again evaluated and then divided according to their risk assessment.
Troublemakers and violent inmates are placed together. All weekend inmates, trustees and work release inmates are put together. All suicidal and mentally ill persons are sorted together. Finally, the sober ones are segregated together. All Covington visits are non-contact. There is a glass partition between an inmate and a visitor. Covington also has a video option. Visitors are allowed to visit inmates as from Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 7 PM. Visitors are not allowed to carry any metallic objects inside the facility. A thorough search will be conducted before entry; this includes even personal belongings.
