More Information
A place in Washington called Walla Walla County is located in the southeastern part of Washington. Before the Department of Corrections came to be, Walla Walla County got its' first bank and its' first loans and savings organization. Baker Boyer National Bank had opened in 1869 and was the very first bank in the whole state! The bank amazingly still stands to this day and can be discovered on main street in downtown Walla Walla. Banner Bank was the name of the state's first loans and savings organization, which also still stand to this very day.
Walla Walla Department of Corrections opened it's doors over a hundred years ago, in the year of 1886. This was actually three years before Washington even became a state! Unfortunately, it had been the jail where the state's death row's executions took place. The Walla Walla Department of Corrections is often well-known by prisoners as "the walls" because of this.
The original facility had been constructed in Bucoda, Washington. After a while, rumors of the abusive behavior in the jail and the terrible condition that the institution was in starting growing rapidly. This soon sparked the territorial legislation to start construction of Washington's first actual Department of Corrections. In 1886, $96,000 had been issued for the construction to go down in the city of Walla Walla, Washington. After about one year later, inmates started getting moved to the facility. By 1901, an abundance amount if inmates had been "moved in" to the Correctional facility.
