More Information

Enumclaw is a city in King County, Washington. It is known as the gateway to Mount Rainier National Park. It became a town in 1885 when the railroad began going through the area and was incorporated on January 27, 1913. The current population of Enumclaw is 11,490. The town’s first chief of police, Tom Smith was instrumental in bringing to justice, Roy Jacobs who, in 1935, killed the police chief and a patrolman from the town of Puyallup, WA. Chief Smith also helped to save the Selleck lumber mill in 1929 when it caught fire and lost approximately $350,000. Prior to having a jail building of their own, inmates were sent to the jail in Seattle. During the riots at the Bayne mine in 1913, a then retired Tom Smith helped to arrests the inciters of the riot.

The current jail was established in 1902 along with the telephone, water services, and fire department. The municipal building that houses city hall and government offices was built in 1921. The Enumclaw jail that was built in 1974 is used by other local and federal law enforcement departments. It is a medium-security jail for inmates over 18 years old. In 1975, the jail building received a rating of 3, which is a “fair” rating and was a 21-bed facility. The jail has over 30 police officers, communications, and corrections officers to serve the people of Enumclaw and is opened 24 hours a day. Misdemeanor offenders arrested with the city limits are housed at the Jail located on Wells street.

The jail has a commissary where inmates can buy snacks, clothing, and hygiene products. Inmates may also receive care packages while incarcerated. Family members can make online purchases from the commissary for inmates. Visitors are restricted to two visits per inmate per weekend for up to 30 minutes. The maximum number of visitors is limited to three people; two adult and 1 child or two adults; or 1 adult and one child on a first-come, first served basis. All visitors must have a government-issued ID and not be a felon.

The jail also manages a work release program and will allow out of state inmates to serve their time at the Enumclaw Jail. In 2003, a victim of the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway was found near Enumclaw.

Because of the current high jail population at the jail and increased revenue, the city council is re-evaluating the authorization of a new police officer position. The jail currently has enough beds for 4 females and 21 males.
