The Dawson County jail will house an offender for a short period of time. The inmates, typically, serve less than a year for their sentence. The inmates are convicted for misdemeanors, fights, assaults, thefts and other various crimes. This facility provides the very basics to those serving their time. The basics include a bathroom facility, TV, three general meals a day and some education opportunities. A work release program and other services are also offered to those who are serving time.
The jail had, previously, needed an expansion. The older facility required 50,000 square foot addition. The facility had medium security beds, infirmary, kitchen, medical clinic, laundry and a central booking facility. The expansion project included a relocation of the Sheriff's Operation Center. This project was incorporated into the existing jail. The new design required extra bed space for the existing facility. The Dawson County jail is, now, providing inmates with a cost efficient modular steel wall panel cell construction in order to lower foundation requirements. The expansion allowed the existing jail to reduce utility and site costs. This jail, in Dawson County still has a concentrated justice complex with continued expansion potential. Include security and operational efficiencies within the entire facility.
