More Information
The Greene County Detention Center located in Greeneville, Tennessee is a medium custody correctional facility. The current jail building that stands today was constructed in the 1980s. The building and its surrounding fences are primarily made of concrete. The general structural design of the Greene County Detention Center is a standard pod arrangement; each pod consists of cells for housing two to three people, a larger common area containing metal tables for eating and socializing, and an enclosed outdoor recreation area for physical activity. Other jail amenities include a commissary for inmates' purchases, a gym, a barber shop, a chapel, a medical area, and a library.
Separate from the main detention center campus is a minimum-security jail workhouse, which was originally constructed in 1999; the current workhouse was built in 2001-2002. The Tennessee Corrections Institute recertified both the detention center and the workhouse facilities in 2017. There are plans to renovate and expand the detention center to accommodate more inmates in the future; these plans may include adding onto the existing structures or purchasing land for building new structures elsewhere.
Greene County's first jail was a log building that was erected in the year 1794. The Old Greene County Gaol, now an empty building that still stands in Greeneville, was constructed in 1804-1805. The Gaol was built out of limestone and wrought iron. The building was taken apart and moved to its current location to be reassembled in 1838; a second story made of red brick was then added in 1882.
