In the town of Collierville, TN it is estimated that the first jail was built in 1913 and then relocated to near one of the local fire stations in 1930. During these years, and in the few years after which marked the Prohibition Era wherein the making and selling of alcohol was illegal, many of those individuals held in the Collierville Jail were the operators and workers of whisky stills in a 3-5 mile radius of the town. The Town Marshal took on the job of finding, arresting, and incarcerating whisky still workers and averaged 2 still shutdowns per week.

Today the Collierville Police Jail operates a much larger and more exhaustive facility. The jail is primarily used as a 72 hour holding facility for individuals pending transfer to the larger Shelby County Jail however it acts in various other capacities. The type 2 “temporary holding facility” jail can also be used to house persons, both male and female, who have been arrested on suspicion of committing misdemeanor offenses within the town line including but not limited to drug possession, theft, and assault. Inmates in the Collierville Police Jail may be waiting to see the judge for their arraignment, awaiting trial and/or plea bargains, or serving a sentence of less than a year.
