The low/medium-security Bartlett Police Jail in Bartlett, TN opened in 1998 as part of a newly developed Justice Complex. The jail operates as a low/medium-security facility because it shares its walls with the local police headquarters whose officers also maintain the jail. The proximity to police headquarters allows for the quick and easy transport of arrested individuals from the station for processing to a holding cell. The jail transitioned from a Type II facility to a type I facility when it opened in the Justice Complex, allowing for the holding of inmates for longer than the previously accepted 72 hours.
The Bartlett Police Jail houses male offenders over the age of 18 who have been arrested on misdemeanor offenses such as petty theft, assault, driving under the influence, or possession of a controlled substance; these offenses are generally considered to be less serious in nature by the court system. These misdemeanor level offenders may be housed in the Bartlett Police Jail while they are awaiting release on bond, awaiting trial, or awaiting a plea bargain. The individuals incarcerated in the jail may also have already finished their trial and be serving a sentence of less than a year.
