The Richland County Detention Center was built in five phases. The first was in 1994, with a second in 1995. Phase three and four were in 1997. Phase five was in 2005. The Center was named for Officer Alvin Glenn in 2000. Glenn was putting inmates in their cells, when he was overpowered by three inmates. He was handcuffed and beaten to death by the three. A previous jail was built in 1915. It was built of cement and steel. It had a hospital room and a dedicated doctor. The inmates were separated by race and sex. There were also padded cells for inmates with mental issues.
In 1953, Deputy Sheriff Allen Bennett was searching a wooded area in the county for a bootlegger. He had stopped at the house of another Deputy, but he was out. Bennett disappeared. His body was found on June 20. The suspect was found in North Carolina. He was convicted of murder. He spent twenty years in jail.
On April 17, 1992, Deputy Sheriff John Dial was driving on a regular patrol. He was struck by a pick up truck that was being driven by a drunk driver. The driver was charged with felony driving under the influence. He was sentenced to eighteen years. On December 24, 1992, Deputy Sheriff Edward Alva and his partner responded to a domestic disturbance call. The male suspect was mentally ill. While Alva's partner tried to wrestle the man down, the partner's service pistol discharged. Alva died from the wound.
On October 16, 2003, Narcotics Officer Donnie Washington was driving on Broad River Road while undercover. For some reason, his car went off the road. He died. On May 4, 2005, Deputy Sheriff Byron Cannon and another deputy were following a dump truck on I-20. The dump truck driver was suspected of an assault. For some reason, the patrol car driven by Cannon veered to the other side of the interstate. Cannon hit an SUV head on and then was struck by a car. The patrol car then caught fire.
On December 14, 2007, Deputy Sheriff Darral Lane approached a car at a convenience store. The car had two suspects drove off when they saw Lane. He followed them to a house. The men got out and fled on foot. Lane got one handcuffed. Immediately afterword, Lane suffered a heart attack and died. The other suspect was found.
