The Laurens County Detention Center was built in 1996 and had renovations done in 2012. The renovations cost $5.7 million and allowed the facility to house 128 more inmates.

In July of 2015, Laurens County jail officer Sara Nelson was arrested by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for providing alcohol and having sex with an inmate. The incidents happened on May 300 of that year. They occurred in her car in the parking lot of the detention center.

Deputy Sheriff Clayton Woods was killed on June 15, 1971. Woods was serving papers in the area of the Gray Court. To other deputies were there when a man opened fire. Woods and the other deputies had not approached him. Woods was killed and the other two were wounded. The man was pursued into the woods and was killed in the ensuing fight.

On September 20, 1977, Deputy Sheriff Sherman Massey and two other deputies went to serve papers on a man in relation to a domestic disturbance charge. The man had a pistol and Massey tried to get him to put it down. The man opened fire. Massey was shot in the throat, killing him. Another deputy was shot in the abdomen. The third deputy opened fire and killed the man.

On March 30, 1980, Deputy Sheriff Willie Blakely was directing traffic at the scene of an accident. A vehicle did not see him. He was struck and killed. On September 23, 1982, Deputy Sheriff William Jones was pursuing a suspect he had seen. During the pursuit, he got into an accident and died. On July 11, 2003, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Quarles was responding to a call for back up in relation to a fight at the Laurens Speedway. His vehicle went out of control on A.B. Jacks Road and he hit the embankment. He died around midnight after the injuries were too much.

On July 14, 2011, Deputy Sheriff Roger Rice was participating in a search for a murder suspect. The Fountain Inn Police Department had called for help when a 38 year old man had ran after killing his girlfriend. He was located in Clinton. While approaching, the man opened fire and killed Rice. The other deputies opened fire, wounding the man. He is serving two life sentences.
