Lehigh County Prison was built back in 1813 and used to be a historical county courthouse. 52 year's later A Grand Jury made a vote on building a new prison. The first man to be executed took place back in 1894. Harry F. Johnson was held responsible for the death of his daughter Bertha May Johnson. The last execution that took place was an ax murderer man named George Schaffer. Back in 1915, Lehigh County Prison went from hanging to the electric chair following Jonas Brobst as the first to be electricuted.
The facility holds a capacity of 1,352 inmate's. Inside the facility they're are correctional officer's who work in the housing unit's, who can contact with the inmate's. The inmate's are allowed visitors every 3 days for 30 minutes. They are allowed 2 visitors at a time, along with an infant or a child. Visitors must be 18 years of age or older. Visiting hours are monday through friday 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please dress appropriate, and do not come in under the influence of drugs or alcohol, otherwise visitors will not be permitted to visit the inmate they are trying to see.
Inmate's had filed a lawsuit due to overcrowding, and claimed that the condition's in the old prison had violated their right's, This legal issue lasted for 4 years before the inmate's won. A new prison had been built and opened for business since May of 1992. The Correctional Facility was re-named to "Lehigh County Jail" back in 2014.
