The Lincoln County Jail, also known as Newport Jail in Oregon has a mission. Their mission is to enhance the publics safety, reduce the fear and impact crime has on the town, and to improve quality of life for the future generations. The jail opened on June 1st, 1992. The jail has programs for the inmates to enjoy, such as educational classes, drug classes, and religious services.
They have volunteer programs that people can join and help the prisoners. They have four different volunteer groups, prison fellowship, AA also known as Alcoholics Anonymous, NA which is Narcotics Anonymous, and Native American ceremony. When volunteers and inmates work it helps save taxpayers, but not only does it help the taxpayers, but it also helps the inmates perform and provide valued job skills to get themselves back into the workforce. The jail is male and femal based. There’s a phone service specifically for victim information and notifications. It’s to give information to victims and citizens about inmates custody, cases, and release.
In February 1893 state legislatures established Lincoln County as a county and picked George A Landis as first sheriff. George Landis was sheriff for five years. James H Ross took over in 1898 and was sheriff for over 12 years. James Ross was from Iowa, but came here to be Deputy to sheriff Landis. After spending 8 years as sheriff, Ross stepped down in 1911. There has been 13 new sheriffs in Lincoln County since 1911 up to 2016.
