It was founded back in 1901. Its located South of the Historic Mountains National wildlife reservation. The facility was established using what is called a lottery system for over 160-acre plots. By this time, other parts of this territory used land runs. Throughout the years, the facility struggled to develop and grow to a maximum sized correctional facility. It managed to bulge from a capacity of 35,000 inmates in the year 1950 to around 80,000 in 1990. Presently, Lawton has about 99,000 residents including a military base and the home of the fire center for the United States Army.
During Lawton’s establishment, the facility was also set up as the County seat for Comanche. The facility was first ruled by the County government. It was appointed by the then Governor of Oklahoma territory. In late 1901 in December, an election was carried, and a Lawton government was formulated. The first officers that were elected include city clerk, mayor, judge, city attorney, treasurer, street commissioner, eighty-eight councilmen, city marshal, a school board treasurer, and eight school board members. This was the genesis of the Lawton police department.

The facility sits on 550,443 square feet. It’s double celled and includes medium security units that entail double celled segregation units.
The entire Lawton jail was designed by an agency known as the American Correctional Association compliant.
