The jail located in Summit County was the first jail of it's size in the state of OH to introduce direct supervision management. Direct supervision management is a term that refers to law enforcement personnel be locked inside inmate housing to control and maintain order. The Summit County Jail has been in operation since August 5th 1990, during more recent years changes in how the jail operates have been made. In May of 1995, a new addition to the jail was built. The addition allowed more prisoners to be housed.
In June of 2005, the jail had agreed to the double bunking of lower class inmates. The jail uses an objective inmate classification system, this determines daily housing assignments based on an inmates demeanor towards non-violent and violent offences. Inmate are housed using the classification method, all inmates are classified based on their criminal and arrest history, as well as mental instabilities. Inmates can be reclassified once they have been monitored inside the jail, if an inmate behaves accordingly then their class might be redeemable, if they consistently act out and cause issues with staff or other prisoners, their classification can be effected negatively. If an inmate is deemed high risk to medium risk they will be held in single person cells, if inmates are low risk prisoners, they will be held in two person cells. Low risk inmate workers have the opportunity to work in the jail as cleaners, kitchen operator, and laundry.
Jail deputies are always assigned to accompany inmates on these tasks, Laundry services are open 16 hours a day, Monday-Friday. Inmate uniforms are exchanged or cleaned twice a week, Blankets every two weeks, and inmate towels and linens every week. The jail has a very modern way of booking inmates, inmates will arrive at the jail via transport, then he/she undergoes a safety pat down, they are then booked, fingerprinted, and photographed. The jail keeps inventory of all inmates property they arrive at the jail with, they also provide inmate medical screening.
