Washington County Jail was opened in 2003 in Fort Edward NY. The correctional facility was built to replace the old jail that was built in the late 1800s that were located in Salem New York. The corrections division office employs 56 full time and 20 part-time officers. These officers are sworn in as New York State peace officers and receive state-mandated training in corrections.
Washington County Jail is a maximum security facility. Inmates held in this jail range from low to high-level offenders. The jail security system is like a maximum security state prison these features include cameras, electronic detection, and reinforced razor wire. As for the security officers, their armed with mace and trained to use physical force.
Washington County Jail feeds their inmates three meals a day which total outs to be a 2,500 calorie diet. Inmates are also allowed one hour of exercise, books, bathroom, and shower. Mail is allowed and magazines from a trusted publisher’s only. Washington County Jail thrives to provide a safe and secure environment. They feel this encourages positive inmate behavior by being fair, impartial and humane treatment.
Washington County Jail has been designed to manage inmates by using the new generation and direct supervision concept. They believe through these concepts the facility will be able to structure the environment which will promote positive behavior. Property that can be dropped off for an inmate is three pairs of white only socks, three pairs of white only t-shirts, three pairs of white only underwear, three white only sports bras, one pair of white only thermal underpants and one pair of thermal undershirts. All dropped of items need to be new and in their package.
