More Information
Because every jail has its own rules, the inmates will be informed of the rules and restrictions upon their arrival. They will also be informed how the prison is about making money to help with the upkeep of the jail. The prison makes money with the use of fees for long distance phone calls. Families of the inmate are charged fees for sending inmates money. Inmates are charged for things like soap and toothpaste. The jail encourages families to work together by communication and sharing information.
Their mission includes positive change in offenders and inmate reintegration into the community. Inmates are helped to change their way of thinking and shown how their crimes have affected the lives of their victims. Various programs are used to manage mental health issues and addictions. While incarcerated, life skills and job skills are taught. Victims are provided with accurate, timely information and support.
The current facility has doors falling off of the hinges. Corroding metal walls need to be replaced, the lighting system has become antiquated. These are the things that contribute to the lack of safety for staff, officers and inmates. If improvements do not happen soon, the jail will have to close. The tax payers will have to cover the cost of transporting and housing the inmates.
The jail is currently looking into an expansion. Security is not as good as it can be due to inmate supervision being low. The narrow hallways and blind spots are some of the things that show the lack of modern features needed to keep all safe. The overcrowded facility is less secure and safe because extra inmates have to be placed in other areas that are not prepared for inmate use.
Expansion of the jail is a long-term solution and is cheaper than renting space in an outside facility. If expansion occurs, it will provide new space for receiving inmates and remodeling of the dispatch center. The new jail will meet national and state safety standards. The overcrowding will disappear with the building of the new facility.
