More Information

In 1846, prisoners in the state of Missouri were held in a log cabin built without doors or windows. Inmates were lowered down a trap door through the roof and down a ladder with one way out. Also, during this time, many crimes went unpunished because of a lack of jails and prisons. The current Pettis County Jail is named for a former Missouri congressman.

In 2000, a two-story classical revival style structure built in 1930, became the property of the Pettis County Sherriff’s Office. The 1930’s structure was made of limestone, brick, and terra cotta. Soon, a new jail, made of concrete with round arched windows was opened in 2004 in Sedalia, MO. The Pettis County Jail replaced the existing jail that was on 405 South Lamine Avenue. The new jail is now located on Fourth street between the existing Sherriff’s building and the old jail. The design of the new jail prevented any traffic on Fourth street.

The Pettis County jail is connected on the north to the Federal Building, and on the south to the old jail. In 2015, a new addition was added to the west side of the jail to replace a metal porch and a handicap access to the Liberty Center for the Arts Auditorium. The Pettis County Jail houses inmates arrested in either Sedalia or Pettis County. The inmates are held until they are tried and or sentenced. The jail is staffed and operated by the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office which is connected to the new jail.
