More Information
The city jail of Monett, Missouri was built in 1888. This was the same year as the founding of the railroad town. Those jailed were usually sent to a rock pile to break it up for the rocks to be used around the town if they were unable to pay their fines. The city bought their own ball and chains for use to hobble the inmates. The entire city of Monett has to deal with flooding on occasion. The jail and the police department both are called into service at these times to help.
In 1894, there were race riots started in Monett that spread into the county and beyond. There was an argument between a group of white men and black men. A pistol in the hand of one of the black men went off and a white man was shot. Robert Greenwood died of his injuries. It has still never been determined if the shot was an accident or intentional. The blacks involved in the incident fled from Monett. Another black man was found that had been part of the crowd, but had not fired the pistol, and was transported by train back to the county. A mob of whites pulled him from the train and lynched him.
This incident started the riots. Several people were arrested during this time because of the response. The town of Monett banished all black people from the borders of the town. The businesses also decided not to employ any blacks. Any blacks found within the city were arrested and jailed.
On September 21, 1931, Monett Police Department Night Watchman Elisha Hagler walked up on three men pulling a car out of a garage. He stopped the men stealing the car and ordered them to put their hands up. One man did raise his hands, but another pulled a firearm and fired. Hagler was severely wounded. He passed away a month later on October 21. The suspects were identified by a neighboring police department. Two were convicted of murder.
One of the ways that the police in Monett now use to find criminals are surveillance cameras. There are several throughout the city. The city police use these to find crime happening and bring the criminals to jail.
