More Information
In 1873, the Joplin Police Jail was established in Jasper County, Missouri. The town of Joplin, was then a rough and rowdy mining town. Joplin expanded significantly from the wealth created by mining zinc. Its growth faltered after World War II when the price of the mineral collapsed. Joplin would also be know for the infamous duo Bonnie and Clyde. The couple and their gang were involved in a shootout, where they then killed two peace officers as they attempted to make their escape from the local law enforcement.
Operating now for 146 years strong, the Joplin Police Jail is the largest law enforcement agency in Jasper County. Responsible for providing law enforcement services to a major population center in South West Missouri, encompassing approximately 50,000 city residents and 200,000 visitors and traveling workers daily. Law enforcement is dedicated to provide its citizens and visitors with the best service compassion and fairness can bring.
The Huber Work Release program is utilized at the jail. The program allows inmates who have been sentenced to serve jail time, an opportunity to apply to receive a furlough to go out and search for a job while they are incarcerated, as well as maintain their employment while serving jail time. Joplin City Jail also operates the electronic monitoring program,
or EMP is in place allowing inmates to serve time while being placed on house arrest. In order to participate in the program, the inmate must pay a daily monitoring fee. These programs are placed in the jail in hopes of the inmate obtaining a level of self sufficiency as they are released back into the community.
On May 22, 2011 a EF5-rated multiple-vortex tornado came roaring through Joplin late that afternoon. As the tornado came crashing through, it grew stronger and stronger with winds reaching 200 mph. Emergency crews responded to the deadly and destructive path the tornado left behind. There were 158 deaths reported along with 1,150 injuries. The tornado ripped out approximately 1/3 of the town leaving behind $2.8 billion in damages. Law enforcement and all emergency personnel, along with the help of the inmates, began coming together as a community to rebuild what was so violently wiped away from them.
