The independence detention unit holds all persons that are awaiting sentencing or trial. It also accommodates all sentenced inmates that are serving a jail term of one year. The facility is under the management of a local police department in Missouri. The security in the units is tight and strict. The buildings or the cells that inmates are put are under the watch of the police department. The facility accepts visitors to come and visit their loved ones servicing jail terms. However, the facility allows visits that are scheduled and only during posted hours.

Visitation at independence detention unit is non-contact. There is protective glass separating the inmate and the visitor. The facility has provided a line that all friends and families can use to contact inmates on the other side of the glass. Most of the inmate detainees delivered at the facility have been involved in minor charges like a drug overdose or drunkenness.
