The jail facility is maintained by The Office of Sheriff, This facility is called the “Lenoir Rowelt Criminal Justice Center”, This facility opened in 2004 and provides more security and room. The Pearl River County Jail is considered a “medium to maximum security facility”, and is under the jurisdiction of the Pearl River County Sherriff’s office.
Most inmates housed at this facility range from minor misdemeanor offenses to more severe offenses. Inmates are housed while awaiting trial or release. Inmates that are sentenced to 1-year or more in jail, are transported to the Mississippi State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This jail facility houses inmates, who are incarcerated and awaiting trial or have been sentenced to less than 1 year of incarceration remain at the jail. This facility also houses and maintains inmates who are arrested by surrounding police departments and “surrounding towns or municipalities."
In addition to the housing of inmates, the facility conducts programs such as the “State Work Program.” Inmates who participate in this program, are allowed to work and receive credit for their efforts. The State Work Program allows inmates to attend their regular jobs and return to custody at the end of the workday.
This facility offers programs to the inmates for rehabilitation, drug and alcohol programs. Educational programs, such as the GED program, are also available to the inmates. Medical and mental health facilities are available to provide additional health care. Inmates presenting with mental health issues will be housed in cells designed to “keep them from harming themselves.” Inmates may have access to the commissary and visitations from friends and family members at this center.
This facility has the capacity to hold numerous inmates along with correctional officers and offer many educational and faith-based programs for inmates to rehabilitate while serving their sentences. A state-of-the-art camera system provides staff to monitor all inmates and protect staff and visitors at the facility. The security system monitors all doors and windows with a “special mirrored glass”, which prevents unauthorized access.
Pearl County Jail, through this Sheriff’s agency, works to provide the “highest quality service”, to the public. This facility provides a variety of ways to help the inmates in their custody and still provide a high level of protection to the public. This agency works to “rehabilitate”, not just “incarcerate” its inmate population.
