The Old Jackson County Adult Detention Center built in 1979, housed only a few dozen inmates, this county jail was used throughout years of severe overcrowding, where inmates routinely slept on the prison floor. The old building has now been replaced, with the new detention center, built in October 2015. The new building, erected in PASCAGOULA, Mississippi is a 104,000-square-foot replacement of the old jail. This $27.6 million facility is adjacent to the current county jail, located near Kenneth Avenue and Fair Street.

Contraband issues have been reduced greatly and have made visitations more safe for everyone. There is now a visual visitation room where family members can go to talk to inmates through a video feed. There is a fully secure sally port with sixteen booking cells, ten are singles and six can hold multiple people, and there are two classification rooms to hold women or men.

This new detention center has a larger kitchen that is occupied by fewer inmate employees and a medical center for both medical and dental treatment. There is also indoor recreation rooms for the inmates. Family members that have internet access and a web camera can visit with the inmates from their homes. A major part of this facility is constructed of steel. Which is a great improvement from the old and aging building that had issues with overcrowding and other problems.

Since the time of the newly erected building, a second inmate dies in the Jackson County jail. The first inmate was 35-year-old Robert Gene Danley, Jr who died December 29, 2018, Danley died by hanging. Shaun Prive age 39, died around 3 a.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2019. Prive had attempted suicide in his cell on Saturday the day before. The inmate was found by a Jackson County deputy. Prive was discovered with a sheet around his neck around 12 noon. Sheriff Ezell has stated that there will be an in-depth overview of all the jail protocol and appropriate changes will be made.

Tiffanie Ann Miller age 33, escaped from Jackson County jail switched places with an inmate due for release has been arrested. Police received an anonymous tip that led to her capture. Miller escaped and was free for 18 hours before she was captured.

Miller was being detained at the Jackson County jail on felony charges of shoplifting, and neglect of a special needs adult. Tenia Stork age 31, was being released the same day Miller escaped from jail on a court order about on Monday. She had been arrested on a contempt charge. Miller swapped places with Stork and was arrested on Tuesday. Miller was hiding in a home in the 8500 block of Edgewater Boulevard in Gulf Park Estates when she was captured.
