Itawamba County Jail is a County Jail Located in Itawamba County, Fulton Mississippi. The County Jail sits in the heart of downtown Fulton in the mist of local businesses and shops, but more notably in between City Hall and the local Public Library. While although located the City, The Itawamba County Jail/Sheriffs Department not only services the City of Fulton, but also the Cities of Tremont, Mantachie, and other smaller towns throughout the Greater Itawamba County.
The Itawamba County Jail is a Medium Detention Facility. So the County Jail Serves as a Temporary housing point for low-level inmates awaiting trail, or waiting to be transferred to other local County Jails, Facilities or State Prisons. The Facility, which houses both Male and Female Inmates, offers a variety of inmate services such as Visitation, medical and drug treatment that the inmates have access to while serving their sentence. The County Jail usually houses low level inmates for various crimes such as drug offenses and domestics issues. Inmates usually can serve no longer than a year at the County Facility.
While over 70 years old, the Itawamba County Jail is a well modestly built facility designed to accommodate the small but growing County population. The County, which sits in the North-Eastern area of the state, is part of the Tupelo, Mississippi Metropolitan region which Includes Itawamba and two other Counties. The Itawamba County Jail is a Historic monument in its own right. Built in the 1940's, the Jailhouse, as well as the County, was named after the Great Indian Chief Levi Colbert, better known as "Itawamba", of the Chickasaw Nation. "Itte-wamba Mingo" as he was called, is Chickasaw meaning "Bench Chief". Although his family moved out of the area after his passing, remnants of his legacy can be found throughout the County.
The Itawamba County Sheriffs Department also hold and participate in Annual Events and Festivals such as the ICC Car Show,the Famous "Stand By Your Grill" Professional and Amateur Bar-B-Q Competition, the 4th of July Firework Show on the water, and a host of other yearly Events celebrating the rich legacy of the area. .
