More Information
Eunice, a town located in Louisiana, is as colorful as its founder, Cornelius "Curley" Duson!.Duson was a distinguished lawman who served as a deputy sheriff of St. Landry Parish from 1874-1888. Cornelius Duson was an expert marksman who maintained law and order by tracking down notorious outlaws and bringing them to justice. Louis Rousseau, a known murderer, was one of those outlaws. Duson tracked Rousseau from Ville Platte, Louisiana all the way to Oklahoma, captured him, and brought him back to St. Landry Parish for his trial and execution in 1877. Duson was also a prominent land developer who named the town he discovered after his second wife Eunice(nee Pharr)Duson. Eunice was incorporated as a city on June 4,1895.
In spite of its small size, the city of Eunice is sticking with the law and order tradition of its founder CC Duson by ownership and operation of the Eunice City Jail. The Eunice City Jail is annexed to the Eunice Police Department, which is located in the St. Landry Parish. It is a medium security level, locally operated short term correctional facility. The most recent Eunice City Jail building was constructed in 1979 as a means to temporarily detain inmates awaiting trial, sentencing or both. When a suspect is arrested, they are quickly detained at the Eunice City Jail. While detained,an inmate's maximum stay at the Eunice City Jail is approximately 72 hours. Inmate's who need a longer stay will be transferred to the St. Landry Parish jail.
The Eunice City Jail is a temporary holding facility for inmates. The employees that operate the jail, also run the Eunice Police Department. The jail employees adhere to the same values as the police department. Those four values are as follows; loyalty, respect, eervice, and integrity. The employees pledge as a whole to be loyal to the law of Louisiana and the community at large. Integrity and respect is toward the suspects that are arrested, the inmates detained as well as the community. Service by the employees is to the community and to fellow law enforcement agencies as a professional courtesy.
