Simpson County Jail is home to inmates who were classified as offenders and have short sentences; such as probation violators, those awaiting trial or court appearances, or those waiting for the release and are financially unable to meet the requirements for release. The jail consists of two levels with individual cells for inmates. Inmates are generally in their cell most of the day; however, they're allowed to play games; such as checkers, chess, card games, or dominoes. A typical day for an inmate at Simpson County Jail is waking up to an alarm for the start of their day followed by breakfast. Meals for breakfast and lunch are served in the cafeteria, where inmates are seated at tables that are mounted to the floor along with attached seats. The food is made by the inmates who have experience in the culinary field. The inmates who are assigned to cook are usually on work release from the jail, they may be there on misdemeanor charges.
Inmates can participate in several classes where they will learn the necessary skills needed to cope with life after incarceration. These classes are incorporated into their curriculum for the inmates to gain a greater education after their release. Receiving a General Education Development (GED) diploma; equivalent to a high school diploma is a major turning point in some inmates lives. Most inmates thrive in these classes because the county jail is considered less stressful than a regular prison.
Some inmates may have been in jail because they're unable to control their temper. Statics show that nearly 20% of offenders have had anger issues which turned violent. They will need to be counseled and have training on how to deal with the anger problems. Inmates who are in jail because of drug and alcohol addiction will have the opportunity to take a relapse prevention training. This will enable them to understand that there is someone who can help them. They'll learn what causes relapsing and how to avoid it. This training is recommended for those who have already been undergoing treatment.
Visiting hours are available for family and friends to communicate with their loved ones while in jail. They will have to go through a lengthy process when arriving at the county jail.
