It is located in the city of Greenup and provides a unit of incarceration for criminal offenders in and around the area. This county jail operates like most other jails of its type. It is run by both the state of Kentucky and Greenup County. Along with being run by county and state government officials, Greenup County Jail is also run by the local sheriff’s department. The county sherriff has a considerable amount of authority when it comes to the operations of Greenup County Detention Center.
This county jail was built thirty years ago as a primary location for incarcerating people who are convicted of minor crimes. Greenup County Jail was intended to provide the county and the state government with a reliable location for incarcerating people in and around the city of Greenup. For the past thirty years, Greenup County Jail has been making improvements in both its operations and technology. It has evolved into a modern day correctional facility.
