More Information
Generally, county jails and prisons are only differnt because prison is for inmates with longer sentences and the county jails are for holding. Holding a criminal in county jail is meant to keep them off the streets until a judge decides to free them or he or she decides what sentence the offender will be given for their crimes. Meade County in Kansas is actually an historical location in that at its inception was a log building back in 1826. This was the first building. In 1906, and the 3rd building was built it was made out of brick. It is now a 2 story building. By 1984, Meade County Jail was placed in the National Registry of Historic places.
With the growing number of people being arrested in the United States, prison and jailing systems will continue to grow and it is safe to say that Meade County Jail will be one to expand as well. Realistically, it it inevitable for all institutions in the world to expand through the coming years as the Earth's population grows. People are staying in jail longer because because there are so many trials scheduled for inmates awaiting their fate. Primative by comparison to modern times, those weho were found to be criminals suffered whipping and branding in front of the townspeople as a form of embarrassment as well as pain. Also, there are no longer legal hangings being handed out by judges the way that they were when Meade County Jail was in its early years so due process and sentencing is obviously a much longer process than it had been in the past.
The dark past of Meade County Jail mirrors that of almost all jail houses across the country. The government mandates that they all provide safety, food, water and humane living quarters. Imagining that is was not always the case is easy now considering the use of the cruel and sometimes unusal punishments offenders of the law had to face back in the 1800's and early 1900's. Slavery was being abolished but the backlash that caused, especially across southern states, was unfortunately the worst we have since seen in the history of the United States.
