More Information

The Lyon County jail built in 1928 cost $20 thousand. It had five rooms with multiple beds, had a day room, and had exercise equipment. Before that, they had to set up some cells in the county attorney's room in the courthouse to house the inmates. That caused them to only be able to house two prisoners. Even by 1980, the jail was adequate to be able to hold the number of inmates they had, which was primarily male. The jail was renovated in 1981, but it was just updating some of the communications ability and moved the exercise area outdoors. Originally, the structure had living quarters for the Sheriff and his wife. Any official visits that occurred had the wife of the Sheriff cooking a snack for the visitors. The jail before that had been built in 1882 and also held living quarters for the Sheriff. It was a short walk from the courthouse.

In 1973, the three Fryer brothers came across 5 people in the Gitchie Manitou State Preserve. The brothers had originally gone to poach deer. One of the brothers went down and spied on the group and saw that they had marijuana. Claiming to be law enforcement, the men opened fire, killing one. They forced the group to come out. They ended up tying the only female, a thirteen year old, to a tree. They then ended up killing the other three males. They then raped the girl, but left her alive. The girl's testimony led the three to plead guilty. They are serving life without parole.

In June of 2018, law enforcement investigated claims that a man had child porn on his phone. The police went and found Demitrias Webster. On his phone were indeed videos and pictures of young girls that had been in his home. He had put up a hidden camera in his residence to get everything. He had originally lived in Rock Rapids, but had moved out into the country. The officers arrested him and charged him with multiple counts involving the child porn and how he made it. These include ten counts of misdemeanor invasion of privacy, four counts of felony sexual exploitation of a minor, and four counts of aggravated misdemeanor sexual exploitation of a minor.
