Owen County Jail was opened in 1988 in Spencer, IN and the last time it was renovated was in 1997. Once the original construction of the correctional facility was completed in 1988 they began processing inmates. The jail only has a capacity for 66 inmates this means there are only 66 beds for the facility. The corrections division office employs officers who then are sworn in and receive state-mandated training in corrections.

Owen County Jail is a medium security facility. Inmates held in this jail range from low to high-level offenders. Depending on the nature of the crime and their current risk assessment the prisoners are housed in separate areas. The jail security system includes cameras, electronic detection, and reinforced razor wire. The security officers are armed with mace and trained to use physical force.

Owen County Jail feeds their inmates three meals a day which total outs to be a 2,500 calorie diet. Inmates are also allowed one hour of exercise, books, bathroom, and shower. Mail is allowed and magazines from a trusted publisher’s only. Owen County Jail thrives to provide a safe and secure environment.
