More Information
Owhyhee County Jail was located in Silver City, but then moved to Murphy in 1992. The jail in Silver City only held up to 8 prisoners and it needed to house more inmates. The county was established in 1863 and is a total of 7,697 square miles. It is built out of concrete with high concrete walls. It is divided into three areas: cells, common area, and an outside recreational area.
The jail is used to sentence individuals for short term to less than a year of jail term. Any inmates sentenced in Murphy or Owhyhee County Courts is sentenced to Owhyhee County Jail. The first person arrested in 1891 escaped. 5 Indians were also arrested and served 8 months in jail. In 5 years only 7 have been arrested for murder. It's a medium to maximum security facility located in the northern part of Owhyhee County. Inmates are offered a work release program, work furlough, house arrest, private county jails where they serve weekends, and they have a system where they operate on good behavior and individuals can be released sooner.
The jail is run by the sheriff, but it used to be the commissioners who had the authority to run the jail. They employ 5 full time and 1 part time of both detention officers and dispatchers. They help to run the jail. This helps the county to save money.
In the jail inmates are given three meals a day totaling 2500 calories per day. Guards are trained to mace and use physical force. Annual inspections are cleared each year which isn't an easy test to pass. The jail even offers space for individuals outside of Owyhee County. No more than three visitors are allowed at a time and there are strict policies on the times that they can be there. Mail can be sent to the inmates as well as money. Clothing and books can also be brought in for the inmates. The jail runs under the Prison Rape Elimination Act in which the jail has a zero tolerance when it comes to sexual assaults and rape.
